Pause in hostilities

There is yet another pause in hostilities between the United States and Iran following reported diplomatic interventions by Middle Eastern countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, urging restraint and encouraging a negotiated path forward. US President Donald Trump said he cancelled planned attacks on Iran “subject to being able to rapidly make a deal”, claiming that Iran and other regional countries had requested Washington to hold back as the parameters of an agreement had been reached, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

The reported efforts by regional players to prevent further escalation highlight growing concerns that a prolonged confrontation could spiral beyond the control of the parties involved. The Middle East has already witnessed the dangerous consequences of rising tensions, with new confrontations emerging in recent days and the risk of wider instability increasing. Hence, the parties must refrain from dragging on or returning to the hostilities. The latest pause must not become another temporary reversal followed by renewed military action. All sides must use this opportunity to consolidate the ceasefire and move towards meaningful negotiations. The parties should remain committed to the Islamabad memorandum of understanding and build on its framework through technical-level talks aimed at resolving outstanding issues. Diplomacy requires patience, consistency and political will, especially when mistrust runs deep. The mediators who have helped facilitate this pause must remain actively engaged over time, using sustained diplomatic efforts to bridge differences and guide the parties towards a final settlement. The priority now should be ensuring that this pause becomes a pathway towards a permanent cessation of hostilities. Continuing the conflict would only deepen insecurity and create new flashpoints, while a serious commitment to negotiations could offer a valuable opportunity for lasting peace and stability in the region.
